Catalytic Converters

We want to be sure your vehicle will pass the emissions testing. Linear Automotive only uses recommended factory OEM parts and fluids in their repairs and services. The internal combustion engine catalytic converter for the auto was invented to comply with the EPA regulations for exhaust emissions reduction. Eugene Houdry, a mechanical engineer with expertise in catalytic oil refining, lived in the U.S. in 1930. He first developed smoke stack exhaust catalytic converters, forklift converters, then focused on gasoline engines for cars in the 1950’s. The U.S. emission regulations forced the chemical tetraethyllead removed from gasoline, used as an auto anti-knocking additive, because it would form a coating on the inside of the catalytic converter. Later development finally created an auto catalytic converter that went into full production in 1973.Catalytic Converter Repair Plano Allen Richardson McKinney Texas

The three-way Catalytic Converter is to provide the handling and reduction of nitrogen oxides or NOx which contributes to the greenhouse gasses and acid rain. This toxic gas NOx is reduced to nitrogen and oxygen. Another gas carbon monoxide is oxidized or reduced to carbon dioxide. Then lastly the unburned hydrocarbons are oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. The vehicle EPA emissions testing require these three gasses to be properly reduced to less harmful gasses by the catalytic converter in order to drive on U.S. highways.

To handle the conversion or oxidation of these toxic gasses the catalytic converter is made of a core of ceramic honeycomb structure. Next there is a layer or wash coat that is applied to the interior to create an irregular surface to increase the surface area so there is more chance for the chemical reactions to occur to the gasses. Next is layered a mix of precious metals such as platinum (oxidation and reduction catalyst), rhodium (reduction catalyst), palladium (oxidation catalyst), and possibly cerium, manganese, and/or iron. This requires a closed loop engine control system to minimize excess unburned fuel from escaping out the tail pipe.

Usually the first indication that the catalytic converter is having problems is when the auto is taken in for the EPA emissions testing. Here exact emission gasses are measured and the auto owner receives a printout of the results with either a Pass or Fail rating. Then to get more specifics the auto is taken to a mechanic who pulls trouble codes on their scanner to determine the problem. Sometimes it is minor such as a tune-up.Catalytic Converter Replacement Plano Allen Richardson McKinney Texas

Another possible problem with the exhaust system is the catalytic converter with noticeable smoke coming out the tail pipe. When this occurs there is something definitely wrong with the exhaust system. The catalytic converter can be fouled with a coating of some tainted coating preventing the chemical oxidation or reduction of the toxic gasses. If the color of the smoke is blue the coating inside the catalytic converter will be phosphorous resulting from burnt motor oil getting into the system. If the gas coming out the tail pipe is white it indicates that there is some silicone coming from the radiator coolant getting into the catalytic converter.

Other symptoms of a bad catalytic converter may include a lack of acceleration, or feeling like a strong headwind holding you back. If fuel efficiency has abruptly changed the converter may be plugged up. Coated fouled spark plugs or even a burnt exhaust valve can cause the catalytic converter to get plugged up. Fuel that is unburned can accumulate and finally coat the lining of the catalytic converter and then replacement is the only way to get your vehicle back in shape again. Linear Automotive can provide all the testing for your Mercedes and scanner evaluation to determine the problem with your exhaust system and catalytic converter. We can repair your exhaust system back to proper function, so that you can pass your emissions testing.
